About Us

Statement of Purpose
The UC Davis Human Lactation Center provides a focal point for communication among researchers, clinicians, policy-makers and educators to assure that the latest research-based information is made available to those working with lactating women and their infants. The center aims also to foster communication and collaboration among faculty and other professionals interested in human lactation research.

Our specific goals are to:

(1) offer initial training and continuing education on lactation and infant nutrition to physicians, nurses, dietitians, lactation specialists, and other health care providers;
(2)
serve as a resource for health care professionals and mothers with breastfeeding difficulties that cannot be resolved through other means;
(3)
conduct research on lactation and infant nutrition; and
(4)
consult with policy makers from regional, national, and international agencies to support their efforts to protect and support breastfeeding.

WIC In-home Visit Program
In California, WIC agencies encourage their clients to breastfeed using a variety of strategies. Most WIC contacts occur in the clinic setting, although some programs, through special funding, are able to extend hospital and in-home support to their clients. Peer counseling programs, particularly those with an in-home support feature, are yielding promising results. The Southeast Asian population has the lowest rates of breastfeeding initiation and duration in California. Previous work indicates that peer counseling can increase breastfeeding initiation rates in Hmong women. However, breastfeeding rates drop off sharply by 2 months postpartum. More post-delivery support is needed to keep women breastfeeding after they leave the hospital. Our WIC-EFNEP support program is designed to fill the critical gap in services.
